1982年获杭州大学生物系学士学位，其后为上海植物生理研究所硕士，1983-1989年于Purdue大学师从Henry Weiner攻读生物化学并获博士学位，其后于该系从事博士后研究。1992-1996年任密歇根大学生物化学系的助理教授，1996-2000年任副教授，2000年起任教授，2003年至今任密歇根大学生命科学研究院Halvor N．Christensen教授。1995-1999年任国家科学基金细胞生物学组评审员，1997-2002年任期刊“生物化学”编辑，1999-2003年为NIH评委CDF-3组成员。1984年获“农业协会荣誉会员”称号，1989年获Purdue“Arnold Kent Balls奖”，1998-2003年获MacArthur基金会奖，同年获美国生物化学与分子生物学协会“Schering-Plough奖”和华人生物学家协会“青年科学家奖”，2004年获密歇根大学“优秀教员奖”。
